eSports Tournaments – Getting Increasingly Prestigious besides being Popular
Just some years ago, they were just fun elements, related in no way to prizes and professionalism; but today video games are being played on a huge scale, in form of big matches and tournaments, just like real life matches of soccer, hockey, basketball and baseball. The same enthusiasm, passion, enthrallment and excitement are involved in eSports tournaments, though non-gaming public may wonder about all the excitement.
You may say that a video game tournament is not as physically tough as the real life sports tournaments. But if you look at it keenly, you will realize that athleticism is in fact a secondary quality of real life sports. What attracts people to them is “conflict”! Look at the competitions held of weightlifting and gymnastics. They reach nowhere near competitions of football, baseball or hockey in popularity. If sports can be compared to war, then eSports are actually more suitable and attractive to people’s mind, with the fact that they even include actual killing of rivals.
Same as their standard counterparts, eSports have star players, teams, jersey sponsorships and innumerable fans creating fan art. Dota 2, for example, which is the next big title to LoL (League of Legends) in popularity, had sold out last year within an hour at Seattle’s Key Arena. And The International 4 has become a major event, equivalent to any big real life sports completion deciding millions of dollars of prize pool. So, if you consider pro gaming substandard to professional sports, you can look at gap in the prize money and attendance in the two types of sports.
However, still there is a tendency of telling about an athletic child with pride and a gaming child with a bit of embarrassment. Here we should also consider that gaming is taken to be something alien because of the intricacy of games involved. However the regular sports too are not very simple. The rulebooks of these games are so complex and lengthy that even referees don’t remember all the rules.
Another reason for the non-acceptance of e-sports may be a lack of history. While rules of soccer have passed down through generations, rules and concepts of a video game have to be understood anew. Imagine if you would have confronted with basketball as an all new sport today, would you have accepted it as a dear sport or looked down upon its weird scoring system and the traveling violations and backcourt passes?
