Importance of CD Key
A number of computer games need you to enter a specific product key to play the game. This is what Windows and most other applications need you to do. This is to counteract piracy so that you cannot just copy a game CD and share out with all your friends. The problem arises when you misplace or throw away the CD box or case accidentally and you often lose your PC game CD key with it. If you haven’t still installed the game, you need to contact the game retailer or publisher which is possibly wastage of time. However you can take a sigh of relief, if you have installed the game already and entered the CD key, because then it is not lost.
Plenty of games are purchased and downloaded these days on the internet which is not problematic because the game serial numbers are saved in either an email or with a game service like Origin or Steam. You just need your username and password to get them. Moreover, if you install a game through optical media, the CD key is stored in the system registry and can be easily accessed. Thus there are good chances of retrieving any earlier typed in PC game CD keys.
How to Use the CD Key?
- Find out the jewel case with the game in it. Ensure that the CD itself and the case match with each other.
- Insert the CD in the CD-ROM if you have not done that yet. Follow the prompting instructions on the screen. Let the jewel case remain open.
- You will get the CD key on the inner side of the case on the backside of the manual. It is a 16-digit series of numbers and letters separated from each other with dashes.
- Enter the CD key as directed. You will come to know if you succeed because you will advance to the next screen.
CD key is also known as activation code, serial key, product id or product key.
It is important to understand how to keep your CD key safe and how to retrieve it if it is lost, so that you can play the games you buy smoothly and enjoy them.
