With the growing popularity of mechanical keyboards and the arrival of numerous products from scores of manufacturers thereby, it’s easy for a newcomer to get daunted about choosing a truly unique product. Here’s a review of the latest product by GeIL EpicGear, Defiant keyboard. This is the first expandable and modular mechanical keyboard and features the very own proprietary switches of EpicGear.
GeIL (Golden Emperor InternationaL) is one of the most reputable and renowned manufacturers of high quality computer memory products. Initially they were totally focused on memory products and in 2011 they brought their own gaming peripheral brand, EpicGear, which is noted for a variety of gaming products like headsets, keyboards, mice and other peripherals.
As mechanical keyboards are getting increasingly popular, almost all manufacturers of gaming peripherals are producing one such product at least. Each manufacturer is keen on including some or the other innovation and uniqueness, though it’s becoming more and more difficult because a tremendous number of products have been introduced only in last 1 or 2 years.
In an attempt to bring something innovative to stand out from others, EpicGear has come up with the Defiant, a “fully modular keyboard”. The Defiant can be expanded by connecting external accessories. Moreover, its mechanical switches are removable and replaceable too.
Packaging
The Defiant comes in a generously-sized cardboard box along with a pack of 24 MMS switches. The box offers perfect protection to the keyboard during shipping and features the picture of the keyboard. A quick-start guide too is included in the pack, along with three big orange stickers containing the company’s logo and a keycap/switch removal tool.
The pack of extra switches contains eight switches of all the three types of switches. These switches are at present retailed by EpicGear and also one keycap/switch removal tool. This is great as a sample before buying the entire keyboard. If for some weird reason the gamer wants to have mixed types of switches on a single keyboard, s/he can do that by replacing some of the switches with this.
At present, Orange, Purple and Grey switches are being marketed by EpicGear.
