You might think of a mousepad as a small unimportant accessory for your computer. However, when you set out for buying one, whether online or offline, you’d be stunned to see the vast variety in which they come. They’re available from super large to tiny, cloth to plastic and thick to thin – a variety, wide enough to make you daunted. Here you’ll definitely appreciate if we share with you a few tips regarding what to look for in a gaming mousepad.
Components
A mousepad comprises of three main components – the surface, the base and the edge. In a cloth mousepad, the type of cloth, the weave and construction are the most important features to consider, although design can also attract buyers’ attention as funny mousepads are more popular. The terms ‘CONTROL’ and ‘SPEED OPTIMIZED’ are just marketing gimmicks to drive sales; so, don’t be fooled by them. The key is to look for a mousepad that combines SPEED as well as CONTROL. The friction of the surface is an important consideration along with getting the perfect flow for the mousepad.
Base
The base of the mousepad is often an underestimated component. In fact, the base can make or break a mousepad, and hence is the cause of difference between good and great mousepads. As such, there are several thicknesses of mousepads. This thickness can play a major role in your gaming experience.
Slim base (2mm): This is ideal for those who prefer a more solid feel. It’s similar to a plastic/hard surface mousepad, but offers more comfort.

Heavy base (5mm): This is perfect for those who prefer more comfort. Here the surface is much softer and more comfortable. Moreover, the additional thickness is ideal for LAN parties/tournaments, as you are unaware of what kind of surface you’ll be playing on. The added thickness helps negate any uneven surfaces the mousepad would be on, offering you the flattest surface possible.
Standard base (3mm): This is the best of both worlds i.e. slim and heavy. It’s neither too thin nor too thick, and provides a happy medium.
Edge
Both the pieces, surface and base, are often secured by an adhesive. But over time, it usually frays and the surface and base start to detach. Some manufacturers solve this issue by providing a thick stitched frame around the perimeter of the mousepad, thus securing the seams between the surface and the base. This anti-fraying stitch greatly increases the lifespan as well as beauty of the mousepad and endures the test of time with your gaming sessions. Another benefit of this is that you can wash the mousepad more easily, even in the washing machine, as the construction is strong enough to survive machine washes (and soap), making your mousepad look brand new every time. Here air drying is recommended.
Extended Mousepads
Usually you think of a mousepad as a small square meant only for your mouse. However, extended mousepads are becoming increasingly popular over the years. These provide not only a large room for your mouse, but also support your gaming keyboard. The mechanical keyboards that are preferred by most gamers today can be conveniently placed on the extended mousepad and you can enhance your overall typing experience.
We hope that these tips will help you find a perfect gaming mousepad and your gaming experience reach the next level.
