1. Whose Name has Mario Got?
Mario was not at first identified as Mario; he was just known as Jumpman. He was named Mario after the landlord of the first American office/warehouse of Nintendo, Mario Segale. When Nintendo was late in paying the rent, Segale trusted them and allowed to pay at a later date. As a token of gratitude, the house made him immortal by naming their most beloved mascot in the gaming world.
2. Mario was Originally a Carpenter
Mario first appeared in Donkey Kong, a classic arcade game in which he was seen as a carpenter employed on the construction at the top of which Donkey Kong escaped. Mario later took up the profession of a plumber when the original Mario Bros. focused on sewers and pipes.
More interesting fact is Popeye was to become the main star of Donkey Kong. But because Nintendo couldn’t acquire the rights to Popeye, it wasn’t possible. Later when they acquired the rights, they created another classic arcade game with Popeye.
3. First Mario Power-up with Eyes – Starman
Today you can commonly see “eyed” flowers and mushrooms across the many fantastic worlds that Mario travels. But the first power-up that had eyes in Mario games was the Starman. All the other power-ups were blind in the original Super Mario Bros.
4. Mario’s Dress is Upturned but Not in His Cover Art
Mario’s original dress was drawn as red overalls and blue shirt. But in Super Mario Bros. it was upturned and made blue overalls and red shirt. But in the cover art, the original red overalls and blue shirt were kept the same.
5. Gunpei Yokoi – Father of Mario
Everyone knows Shigeru Miyamoto as Mario’s father. However, it’s a lesser known fact that it was Gameboy’s original developer Gunpei Yokoi who developed the first Mario game, Super Mario Land for the Gameboy.
