Some people when interested in a topic don’t mind immersing themselves into an extensive online article that couldn’t be distinguished from some printed content. However, most internet users expect something different when reading articles on their computer screen. Each medium is different and therefore it has its own rules. Keep in mind that you are not writing for readers, but for scanners. When people are buying books, they probably read synopsis, the biography of the author and testimonials. On the other hand, when people are picking up a newspaper or magazine, they just peruse the headlines. The same principle can be applied online. So, bullet lists, captions, headlines and subheadings have to be provided for scanners. Sentences should be concise and clear. Paragraphs should be tight and short. Most likely, visitors won’t read, but scan an article, so points of entry should include as much information as possible.
It’s important to think about your audience. Why would they come back to your website? Do you offer information on what is happening in the food market? Is your prose so witty, that they would bookmark your blog? Your content should be shaped accordingly. Think about what you write, but also how your articles appear.
Try to design your content to look more organized and related. If you run a gardening website, why wouldn’t the dots in the bullet list be swapped by little flowers. Of course, don’t overdo it. The message you send shouldn’t be “oh, how creative and clever I am”, but to show your page is entertaining or useful.
If you are providing an example or building your arguments, don’t be afraid to insert a link to your source. You won’t lose your own visitors, but keep them on your site knowing you’ve done your homework properly.
