We like strategy games because they are commonly the result of planning, tactics and thinking, contrary to all those luck-based games. There are many sub-genres, but the strategy game types are: simulation games, abstract strategy games and war games.
Abstract strategy games are not everyone’s cup of tea, but they have been considered the “purest of all games” because the little use of chance, a lots of logic and minimalism and elegance in design. Chess, Go, Checkers, Mancala and other ancient games are typical abstract strategy games.
War strategy games are usually simulations of wars, entire battles and campaigns. These games are simulation of various military operations that involve two or more forces (players) and using information, data, rules, procedures and descriptions to depict what was actually happening or assumed situations. Typical war strategy games are Risk, the Diplomacy, Axis and Allies.
Simulation games are those that copy different “real life” activities in the form of a game. Usually, there is no strictly defined goal in the game, just playing it to improve the character, skills etc.
Nowadays, these three types are gathered and combined to make a hybrid game. Strategy Video Games are perhaps one category of strategy games consisting of one or more main strategy game types. You can play many online strategy games, Risko or Checkers, for example. Strategic video games have three main sub-categories: RTS (real-time strategies), Turn-based strategies and Action real-time strategy games.
