the-personal-cloudPersonal cloud offers you ultimate security without having to sacrificing easy access. The concept of cloud computing is to let multiple people access data often wirelessly and many times from vast distances. E.g. when you use webmail and store images on Flickr, Facebook or Instagram, your images are in the cloud. Or sometimes a company connects computer workstations of employees to a central server for proficient sharing of documents, which is another type of cloud. Cloud computing can be small or big scale. And also you can create your own personal cloud. Actually personal cloud will soon replace personal computers according to research. The more people use smartphones and other mobile gadgets as computers, the more they will want on-the-go access to all their private content. Rather than being tied up in a laptop, your data will be in your very own cloud.

What is the difference between personal cloud and private cloud?

The two terms “personal cloud” and “private cloud” are used for a same thing and sometimes for different things which can be confusing. The concept is new and different industry players are forming their own definitions.

Most of the times, “personal cloud” means a small cloud network you establish for your home or business. It may be linked to the internet but it is meant to be secure and inaccessible from bigger cloud computing ventures like Google or Amazon. Due to its secure nature it is sometimes referred to as a “private cloud”.

The key benefits of a personal cloud are security and privacy. Access is in your control. Whether you want to store photos or your business documents, to know who can access what is important.

Public cloud also can be secure. However they have faced problems. E.g. in 2011, the cloud-based services of Amazon came down and eventually brought down many other online services, including Foursquare and Reddit. This repeated in 2012, when Amazon was hit by electrical storms and further disturbed the services of Pinterest, Instagram and Netflix. In 2011, Dropbox – the popular cloud file-sharing service too faced problems with security of username and password, leaving users’ files open for public for hours.

Such incidents, though they are rare, can destroy some users’ data permanently. A survey in 2013 by Symantec points towards the fact that 43% of cloud computing users lost their data in the cloud and could restore it only from their own backups.

Forming your personal cloud isn’t perfect, but does offer you control over your data. You can come to know how safe your system is, when it is backed up and who can reach your data.

How can You Form Your Personal Cloud?

You can form your personal cloud by installing a personal cloud software on your computer and can easily access the files located there anywhere from the internet. There are many services providing this software, Tonido being one of the best.

Consider setting your own personal cloud and free yourself from the worry of unwanted access to your personal data.
