Storyline

Far, far from us there is another planet Earth which is totally different from ours and the human history there has turned a dark page. The mankind has acquired almost unrestricted power because of the 20th century discovery of Aether. This has sparked a fierce war to achieve the control of that power. This has resulted in huge Aether-run flying machines plied the skies which are devastating the cities below till virtually nothing is left behind. From the ashes left, a human civilization is born and they found the United Nations which take control over the few left over Aether extractors and converts the war into games, in form of battles between champions to achieve the control of the Aether.

As per the creative director of the game, Jan Wagner, the love and care for the universe they have created in the game set them apart from many other games with a more practical approach.

Aerena is also different than the other titles in the MOBA genre in other aspects. This game has almost nothing in common with other battle arenas with regard to gameplay. The aim of the game’s creators was to combine the strategic profundity of a game such as chess and the kind of personalized play style seen in a collectible card game. Therefore each champion has set limitations and strengths and constructing your team is a layer of personalization; however you refine it even more by stacking your deck, so as to say, with capabilities from Aether shells and ships.

The game is turn-based but the time restriction adds a speed-chess component too to the gameplay. It persuades gamers to actually dig into the potential of their teams and create strategies. On the backside of that, getting hit offers an Aether boost actually, so the contests continue to be competitive till the end.

The action in the Aerena happens in small playing fields, between very small teams of only a few champions on every side which are engaged from the beginning. Because of the design, two unique benefits are conferred upon the game. Firstly, matches are often short and sweet, which is a big benefit for people who get only a few minutes to spend on their tablets or mobiles, and secondly sharp, focused policies are a do-or-die proposition.

Benefit of a smaller field is, each decision taken on it is important. Every activity and movement can at once affect the likely strategies and counter-strategies for every champion, compelling you to continuously think beforehand and adapt. That kind of intensity doesn’t occur if you have to take four turns, only to meet your rival. If you wish to play a one-hour match on a large map, there are many MOBAs which can provide that, but that’s not our game Wagner says.

Aerena is going to be launched as a three-to-play game, but like several studios of today, Cliffhanger is up to doing everything to ensure that free players too can equally enjoy. Players wishing to have a champion permanently in their lineup or acquire a particular package of Aether shells can pay for doing that, but all champions will available for free on a rotary basis and Aether shells will be randomly handed out “extremely readily”. The only things available exclusively for paid gamers will be unique visual items such as skins. This is aimed at keeping the competition healthy at every skill level.

And the fun starts with two flying steampunk-style ships docking on each side of a floating grid-based “Aerena” and champions offload – a range of bizarre characters like a disaffected dock worker, a fist-fighting genius. an erstwhile actress, a mentally ruined veteran of the Aether Wars and more. Your objective is simple – to knock the other ship out from the sky. But accomplishing this job is pretty challenging, by benefitting from the strengths of your champions, exploiting your enemy’s weaknesses and arranging the supply of Aether.

Currently Aerena is offering a Proving Grounds to take a feel of the game, but the actual fun is in the League play online; the release version is also going to provide a “light single-player campaign” that will act as a backdrop to your ascend to “Aether Master”.

Other prominent features of Aerena are:

  • Friendly non-ranked matches
  • Distinct powers for every ship
  • More champions, arenas and Aether shells

You will also have progression and missions/achievements with Rewards, XP and Trophies by March end.
